Welcome - UNSW Environment Collective

Enviro Collective Week 1

E-mail Print PDF

Meeting on the Quad Lawn, every Monday 12-1pm

Look out for the Enviro collective banner. If its raining, still come! - We'll find an alternative location.

EVENTS COMING UP:

1) Green drinksstarting week 2 on Wednesday at the Uni bar at 5PM. Come chat about just about anything and meet some new people. We'll have some sort of banner, table cloth, etc. so you can spot us!

2) Institute of Environmental Studies talks, March 3 and March 4

There are two talks coming up in the next week and both sound particularly interesting/relevant:

Wednesday 3.30 -5PM 'The Brave New World of Carbon Trading' which is in the Law Building GO2

Thursday 10 - 11.30AM 'Lives Per Gallon: The true cost of our oil addition' in the John Goodsell Building, room LG19

See the IES website for details. Hope to see you there!

3) Clean Up Australia day, March 7

This is a really worthwhile event that Im sure most people are familiar with. Im hoping the university campus is clean enough already but I encourage people to find a location in their area. The Clean Up website has a search function for this very purpose!

4) SEAN gig, March 19-21

This event is slightly ambiguously named (but bear with me!). SEAN stands for the Student Environment Activist Network which is the NSW branch of ASEN, the Australian Student Environment Network. This group is explained on their website, but includes all sort of smaller groups similar to the UNSW Enviro collective (and lots of like-mined people!). This weekend brings together enviro kids from all the Sydney universities, Wollongong, Newcastle and maybe a few more places in between. Its always super-chilled and can involve skill-shares, workshops, and lots of general discussion and hanging-out. It's an awesome opportunity to get back to nature, cook yummy food and meet some rad people.

Earth Hour, Saturday March 27 8.30PM

5) Flotilla in Newcastle, March 28

This might be the most fun you can have while defending the environment – highly recommended! The Flotilla is organised by Rising Tide, a strong climate advocacy/action group based in Newcastle. This is an annual event. They get a few hundred people out in kayaks (and other make-shift vessels!) into the channel that connects the coal exportation terminal to the open ocean. This shuts down the export of coal for most of the day. Since Newcastle is the largest coal exportation port in the world the amount of coal interrupted is significant. The action itself is super safe and non-arrestable, and the whole weekend is always a lot of fun :-)

6) Enviro week 5, March 29 – April 2

Each week on the Arc calender is allocated a theme (Arts, International, etc), and this semester we have been given Week 5. This is good as it should be before people start getting too busy with class work (and its the week before the mid-semester break). The week allows us to engage with other members of the UNSW community who might not be as environmentally aware as ourselves. We generally choose 2-3 events to put on over the week. Past events have included music, debates, forums, cake stall, BBQ at the Round House(great success!), breakfast, and a few other things that escape me right now(!). We will discuss Enviro week during collective. If anyone has any grand ideas they would like to put forward feel free to contact us at any time:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Well, I'm excited! Thanks for reading. We hope to see lots of you at the meeting on Monday.

O-Week 2010

E-mail Print PDF

O-week is almost upon us and we look forward to meeting lots of new people and catching up with some old friends.

If you're new to uni or just new to the Enviro Collective then come find our stall sometime during the week (10am-4pm Monday 22nd -Friday 26th) and have a chat or come to the first meeting in week 1. This semester we'll be meeting weekly on Mondays from 12-1 on the Quad lawn, look for the banner and a circle of people.

Who are we? A group of environmentally concious students who like to campaign both on and off campus. One of the big things coming up soon is a people's blockade of the world's biggest coal port on March 28 in Newcastle, which is expected to stop exports from the port for a time and also be a lot of fun. The best way to get to know us is to come along to a meeting but things we like are the bike club, the Thoughtful Foods food co-op, the stationery re-use centre and renewable energy.

You can sign up to our weekly email through the tab on the top right-hand corner of this page, or contact us directly at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Leith Sharp - founder UNSW's green campus program and founding director Harvard's Green Campus Initiative

Leith Sharp has 18 years of experience in greening universities around the world. Beginning her career in 1993 as the first paid environment officer of any student union in Australia, Leith was recruited in 1995 by her undergraduate university, the University of New South Wales (UNSW), to establish one of world’s first green campus programs. Over five years Leith grew UNSW’s program from just herself to 10 full-time professionals leading the way in a variety of green campus arena’s such as transportation planning, recycling and composting, greenhouse gas reduction and green office practices. For her work in Australia Leith received numerous awards including Young Australian of the Year, NSW Environment Category and a Churchill Fellowship, allowing her to spend 5 months abroad studying best practices in international campus sustainability.

In 1999 Harvard University recruited Leith to become the founding director of Harvard’s Green Campus Initiative (Recently renamed the Office for Sustainability). By 2008, under her leadership, Harvard had the largest green campus organization in the world and was a recognized global leader in campus sustainability, receiving the highest national green campus ratings from the Princeton Review, the Sustainable Endowments Institute, the Sierra Club and Grist. Specific achievements include over 50+ LEED building projects (mostly Gold), a $12 million revolving loan fund (funded over 200 projects), wide scale behavioral change, a significant GHG reduction commitment, alternative fuels for vehicles, green cleaning, environmental purchasing and much more. Awards for her work in the USA include: the 2003 “Most Outstanding Paper” Emerald Literati Club Award for Excellence; a 2005 Department of Energy and EPA Green Power Leadership Award; a 2006 Cambridge City “Go Green” Business award for energy conservation and renewable energy at Harvard University; and a 2009 Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Boston Society of Architects in 2009 for her contribution to advancing green building in Boston.

Leith has consulted and presented to over 100 organizations and sits on the governing committees and editorial boards of numerous organizations dedicated to greening higher education including the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education and the International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education. Leith is currently engaged in a variety of international campus sustainability related speaking, writing, teaching and consulting activities. Leith has an ongoing affiliation as a visiting scholar with Harvard School of Public Health and continues to teach organizational change management for sustainability and green building design through Harvard’s Extension School.

Leith has a bachelor of engineering (environmental) from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia and a Master of Education (human development & psychology) from Harvard University.
