Cycling to SoS
Some adventurous ones are cycling from Sydney (or a couple of hours south of sydney) to Melbourne! Here is what they say:
It will take about 12 days, so we’ll be leaving on or near Wednesday 24th June. We’ll be camping and cooking in camp-sites and rest areas along the way, and it should be a rollicking adventure. You’ll need to be reasonably fit, but there are still a few weeks to get some practice in.
If you’re interested in riding to Melbourne with us, email

Hitch-hiking competition
Some other adventurous ones are hitch-hiking to SoS, and racing! Maybe you have already seen the emails on the SEAN e-list? So I'll keep it brief-
Info session/workshop on hitch-hiking at ASEN space in Erskineville in Sydney at 3pm on the 2nd of July
Competition launch on the 3rd July from Newtown/Erskineville area
register your team or more info

So that is just about it for now. I haven't included info on return trips, but perhaps folks can look up what time best suits them. Especially people going to Sydney for Powershift, which starts the day after SoS ends! I guess the overnight train or bus could work, and I do believe the Powershift crew are organising buses from central Sydney to the venue, at the University of Western Sydney.
3. Flash Mob - Friday June 5th, World Environment Day
www.yourplanetneedsyou.com.au
http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/event.php?eid=91795978155
On Friday June 5. Landcare Australia will be celebrating World Environment Day as well as the conclusion of their Your Planet Needs You campaign. Due to our time zone, Australia will be first to kick-off World Environment Day 2009, and photos or news coverage of the Flash Mob will be distributed and broadcast internationally!
For this particular event, participants will be allocated 100 inflatable globes to share in the flash mob at the mission briefing at the Botanical Gardens. They will then take the globe with them and walk around the Circular Quay area of the city, and at the designated time, converge near the Quayside Brasserie at the end of Macquarie Rd, close to the roundabout that leads you to the Opera House for an all out Globe Party!!!
We need more people to be at the Flash Mob in Sydney Friday June 5 so please do come by!
| Date: | 05 June 2009 |
| Time: | 12:30 - 13:30 |
Meet: We will be meeting near the Botanical Gardens behind Circular Quay, at the park that runs alongside Macquarie St at exactly 12:30pm for the mission briefing, where the organisers and one of the campaign’s celebrity ambassadors (whom will be announced closer to the day) will give you instructions and a pep talk about the event...http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Royal+Botanic+Gardens,+Sydney+New+South+Wales,+Australia&sll=-25.274398,133.775136&sspn=56.573394,79.101563&g=.au&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FRJI-_0doWIDCQ&split=0&ll=-33.862442,151.213323&spn=0.001639,0.002414&t=h&z=19

4. National Climate Emergency Rally –Saturday 13 June 2009.
National Climate Emergency Rally, Saturday 13 June 2009
Hi Everyone,
We need as many people as possible to come to the Sydney (and other state) event as part of simultaneous nationwide climate rallies.
So, if you are concerned about the lack of action on climate change, the impact on vulnerable people around the world and the urgent need for renewable energy, this is your chance to be heard.
Join with climate action groups, environmental organisations, unions, religious organisations, local councils and other bodies to be part of the climate solution!
Meet at 10am in Barangaroo, Hickson Rd, Millers Pt [on the Darling Harbour side of the Rocks; see map www.climaterally.org/sydney ]
Wear red for urgency!
Organise an action or a bloc
Please pass this email on to anyone you think may be interested in coming along.
Regards, Nicky Ison
5. Attachment – Clean Up Botany Bay Day – June 13th!
From Press release:
Details for the Day
Registration for volunteers will be from 10am at the Watch Tower, Anzac Parade, La Perouse.
Shore based clean ups will focus around Frenchman’s Bay, Congwong Beach and Bare Island with a free BBQ proudly provided by Randwick and Maroubra Rotary Clubs at lunch to say thanks to all the volunteers for their hard work!
There will be Botany Bay Marine Self-Discovery Programs for self guided tours through the intertidal rock pools around Bare Island but also scheduled (1:30pm) Botany Bay Watch Rock Pool Rambles designed for kids (and parents) which will be lead by volunteers. There will be rock pool slates to help kids identify marine species found in our beautiful Bay and a touch pool on the foreshore for kids to get up close and personal with some of the creatures found below the water! “Why not give every child the opportunity to experience first hand the marvels of Botany Bay’s coast ecosystems? Words, photos and video are forgotten quickly, but the tactile sensation of a real Sea Urchin crawling over your hand lasts forever!” said Carl when talking about this important part of the day.
There will be a colouring activity for the kids (need to bring your own colour-in pencils) that will be displayed on the day and that can be exchanged for Botany Bay Stickers and Project Aware activity booklet.

6. Power Shift National Youth Climate Conference - 11th - 13th July - SYDNEY
People will be around the Library Lawns during week 12 come ask questions or sign their petition here: (http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/5594/t/3948/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=492)
f you can't make it to Students of Sustainability Conference (http://www.studentsofsustainability.org/ in Melbourne 6th - 10 July then Power Shift (http://www.powershift.org.au) 11th - 13th July might be for you!
Power Shift 2009 is a national youth summit to solve the climate crisis. Never has the opportunity to impact climate policy been as powerful as now, before the crucial United Nations Climate negotiations in Copenhagen this December. When thousands of young people like yourself come together for three days of climate action, we show every politician that a youth movement is brewing - and it's unlike
anything this country has experienced before.
www.powershift.org.au
Our movement is already proving itself a force to be reckoned with. After the Senate Testimony, one of the Federal Labor Party Senators wrote on our Facebook wall:
"Your work - and the work of everyone involved in Power Shift and Australian Youth Climate Coalition is an important force in creating a political mandate for action. It's a growing mobilising force on climate change that Canberra must recognise."
Take your next step now by registering for Power Shift - earlybird registration is only $65 (and even less if you come with a group of ten or more).
There's a stack of info on the site about the help we're providing with accommodation and travel, including scholarships. We're also giving discounts to people attending the Students of Sustainability conference just before Power Shift. We have some registration scholarships available, and we've waived registration costs entirely for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants.
We need your help. If you can volunteer please email Sara at
