Recycling
Keep those submissions coming folks! The first batch was handed in on Tuesday to great effect - it really showed that the desire for comprehensive recycling is a mainstream view, and their decade-old recycling plan would not be widely accepted.

However, there is still a good chance that we will have recycling exclusively in food court and lecture building areas, with only general waste bins outside. Given this contract will be for 5-10 years, it is important to have a comprehensive system to begin with. It is also important that the uni provides sufficient education on how to properly recycle when the scheme is rolled out.
A submission is simply a letter to the Waste Tender Steering Committee, stating your views on the subject. Submissions can be emailed to

There is no deadline for further submissions, but the earlier the better! Be sure to get friends, fellow students, professors and randoms you meet on campus to sign the petition for comprehensive recycling. You can find it here: unswenviro.awardspace.biz

Enviro Collective / PV Soc. BBQ - Friday 15th of April 14:00-17:30

We are teaming up with PV Soc to put on another of our amazing veggie barbeque's. The food will of course, be delectable; the conversation, ruminative; and the atmosphere, sublime.

Cost will be a gold coin donation and all are welcome. No RSVP required but please state your attendance on the facebook event: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158171614244548
Remember to invite all your friends!

UNSW Green Drinks - Wednesdays 17:30-18:30
Green Drinks has been running for the last two weeks with a turnout of 3 and 1 respectively. I take this as an indication that the noisy, double happy-hour atmosphere is less than appealing. So from now on we will be moving around the corner, into the roundhouse; where the mood is more conducive to easy conversation.

2011 Strategy/Planning Night - Tuesday 19th of April 18:00-20:00

(Activist Space, Blockhouse Level 1)

OK, so the collective has come up with some great ideas for what we can work on for the rest of the year. This strategy session will be focusing on forming these ideas into a solid plan, with set events. The main focus will be on renewable energy (RE), and pushing UNSW to adopt more RE. So bring along your ideas for running an effective RE campaign and we will see you there. RSVP to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Earth Week - Week 8
Word on the grapevine is that Earth Week is next week (Week 8). We’ve also heard that there is a newly formed Earth Week society planning some events for Earth Week. However clarifying these rumours has proved somewhat difficult... But stay tuned!

Sustainability in Higher Education Report-back
A few weeks ago Alex and Ben attended a presentation by Mitchell Tomashow, renowned academic and Principal of  Unity College, Maine, USA. We had some great discussions around how he was able to embed sustainability into the core business of his own College; and methods for doing likewise here. Afterwards we were provided with the following resoources, which may be of interest to people who are keen to move in this direction at UNSW.
The Nine Elements of a Sustainable Campus: dl.dropbox.com/u/21837553/WebFiles/The_Nine_Elements_of_a_Sustainable_Campus.pdf

Energymark CSIRO, Climate Change Discussion Group
Hi all, so far we have recieved ZERO confirmations for this discussion group we proposed in the Week 3 newsletter. If we don’t receive any expressions of interest soon, we will be scrapping the discussion group (which is a shame because we have already been sent all the resources). Just a re-hash of what was said before:

Energymark is a CSIRO project which uses a kitchen table approach to help households and communities reduce their carbon footprints and save power. We will meet every 2-3 weeks at UNSW. As an Energymark participant you will have the opportunity to:
  • Become better informed on energy, climate change, water and waste issues.
  • Engage in public debate on these issues.
  • Reduce your impact on the environment.
  • Lower your carbon footprint at home, work and in the community.
  • Reduce your energy consumption and save on power bills.

There are eight sessions in total, and each will run for about 2 hours. As Energymark is also part of a CSIRO research program there are a number of questionnaires to be completed throughout the program. For more information visit www.energymark.com.au

If you are interested please send me an email on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Once we know who wants to be involved we can organise a time and place to get together.

O-Week 2011

E-mail Print PDF
Hi All!

O-Week is coming up soon, so here are some things to look out for:

Our Stall
The Enviro Collective/Food Co-Op shared stall is number 50, just up from the Red Centre. Come and say hi, send an email to FM assist about the trialled recycling, or just hang out! We will also be having a free gourmet vegetarian BBQ on Tuesday 11am at the Naked Lady Fountain lawn, J15. Hope to see you there!

Climate Change Q&A
An awesome Q&A forum about Climate change with experts in the field. There will be a physical oceanographer, a chemist and a biologist. There will be a brief intro followed by questions being opened to the floor. Tuesday 11am-12pm, Quad Lawn.

End of the Line Film Screening
‘Imagine a world without fish’, End of the Line investigates the effects of overfishing on the oceans and the consequences it will have for all of us. The idea of the film isn’t that fishing is bad and we shouldn’t do it, but that perhaps there is a smarter more sustainable way to do things. A discussion on issues raised in the film will follow. Tuesday 12pm-3pm, Rex Vowels Theatre.

Go-Get on Campus
UNSW is the first university to have this car sharing service. Working under the principle of sharing cars to reduce environmental impact, Go-Get now has two cars based at UNSW. They will be around at O-Week, so check them out!

‘Is there a benefit to a mining tax’ Q&A
Q&A with academics from UNSW and Macquarie about a mining tax and if it would actually have tangible benefits for Australia or would cause more harm than good. Perspectives coming from an engineer a geologist and a political economist. Thursday 11am-12pm, Quad Lawn.

E-mail Print PDF

Sustainability Week is HERE!

From Monday August 23 till Friday 27, keep your eyes open for a number of Sustainability related events that will be happening around campus.

Monday: Bike breakfast, 8-10am at the Sam Cracknell Pavilion on the main walk way.
The UNSW Bike Club will be offering up a comprehensive breakfast featuring fruit, pastries, tea and other goodies. A great chance to recharge after that commute to uni before heading off to class. Even if you are not riding at the moment, this would be a great chance to pick up some tips, cycle routes, and other advice.

Tuesday: Green Community BBQ. Physics Lawn 12.30 -2.30
A seriously scrumptious event that is not to be missed! Come along for a vegetarian BBQ wrap by donation. Have a chat with others about environmental issues, find out more about what the Enviro Collective gets up to, and how you can be more involved. (Also, if you are free from 10am this day and would like to lend a hand cutting vegies, we love to hear from you!)

Wednesday: Sustainability at UNSW Forum, 12-1pm Red Centre G001 (entrance closest to UNSW international/large fig tree)
Come and find out where UNSW is at in terms of sustainability. Insight to be provided by:

  • Aaron Magner, UNSW Sustainability Director
  • A/Prof.Alistair Sproul, senior academic from the School of Photovoltaics and Renewable energy
  • Members of the Enviro Collective

Friday: Co-op crawl, meet 8.45am at the Food co-op (around the back of the Roundhouse)
Join us on a tour of Sydney's food co-ops by bike, or by public transport (your choice) starting at UNSW's Thoughtful Foods then continuing on the ferry to Manly, UTS Ultimo, Sydney University, and ending at Alfalfa House in Enmore around 5pm. Even if you dont know much about the co-op this is a really neat opportunity to find out what’s out there. Cycling the city in a group is also a lot of fun! If you cant spare the whole day, feel free to stay for as long as you like.
